Charlotte Gurran
Painter
Charlotte grew up in Chester, and was a child who was always making things.
Her grandma was a very talented painter, and one of Charlotte’s most fond memories is having a tutorial from her, in a very grown-up formal fashion at just 7 years old, of how to paint a red squirrel in gouache. She explained that she did well until the finishing touch of whiskers …. and applied them far too heavily, ruining her “masterpiece”!
Now after developing her distinctive style through study, charlotte’s process involves the mapping of the movements of birds’ flight. Charlotte records the birds’ flight in the form of lines and once back in the studio, she transcribes these onto the canvas to create the forms within the artwork.
Each painting consists of data gathered outdoors, and so she believes it is only right that where possible she takes the completed artwork back out into the landscape - creating a full circle process.
No line is ever repeated across her works. Charlotte uses new data for each artwork to allow those moments in nature to exist only ever in one singular painting.
Beautiful mixed media painting by artist Charlotte Gurran.

Creating artwork through a nature-derived process in The Lake District. Each piece begins outdoors: often up a mountain, or lake-side. Charlotte’s paintings consist entirely of captured moments from The Lake District. Movements of birds’ flight are recorded in the form of lines and once back in the studio carefully transcribed onto the canvas. New data is gathered for each painting, with no line ever repeated. Upon completion, the artwork is taken back outdoors - interweaving the artwork's creation with nature once more. Colour palettes and sizes can vary but one thing remains a constant, encompassing the origin of Charlotte’s artistic practice: appreciation of our breathtaking Cumbrian landscape.
